Nearly $200,000 Raised at Inaugural Swirl: New York City Wine Tasting Fundraising Event

More Than 200 VIPs from New York City Attend Joint Fundraiser with The Paul Foundation and the Lymphoma Research Foundation to Benefit Blood Cancer Research

Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF) hosted its first Swirl: A Wine Tasting Event in New York City, with long-time partners The Paul Foundation, on November 10, 2016. The inaugural Swirl: New York City Wine Tasting Event drew more than 200 attendees from the greater New York City area and brought in more than $189,000 in support of the Lymphoma Research Foundation and its mission to eradicate lymphoma and serve those affected by this disease.

The event, held at Melrose Ballroom in Long Island City, New York, featured keynote remarks from Lymphoma Research Foundation Chief Executive Officer Meghan Gutierrez; LRF Scientific Advisory Board Member Kara Kelly, MD, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, University of Buffalo; Ellen M. Walker, Esq., Chair of the Board of The Paul Foundation; and a fabulous live auction.

Proceeds from the inaugural wine tasting event will specifically benefit LRF’s Erase Lymphoma program, LRF’s Adolescent and Young Adult Initiative, of which The Paul Foundation is the Founding Sponsor.  Each year, nearly 70,000 adolescents and young adults (AYA) are diagnosed with cancer; and lymphoma, the most common type of blood cancer, accounts for nearly 1-in-5 cancer diagnoses among young people.  LRF’s Erase Lymphoma program aims to assist young lymphoma patients and their families in addressing the unique medical challenges, psychosocial needs and access issues they may encounter by providing expert materials and programs.

“We are incredibly inspired by the tremendous success of the first year of this Swirl event, and we are confident that the funds raised by this event will have an untold impact in the lives of young lymphoma patients and their families,” said Walker. “As a mother who lost her son to lymphoma, this event and The Paul Foundation’s partnership with the Lymphoma Research Foundation is incredibly important to me; I know my son would have been proud of the success of the event and, more importantly, the meaningful strides we are making to improve the lives of all young adults impacted by lymphoma.”

Restaurant sponsors at the inaugural event included 1633, Bareburger, Grace’s Marketplace, Patsy’s Italian, Eli’s Manhattan, Zabar’s, The Souvlaki King, Urbani Truffle Lab and Risotteria Melotti, and Bobby Van’s Steakhouse. Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits generously supported the New York installment of the Swirl series as the official Wine Sponsor, as Richard Shipman, Fine Wine Manager at Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits presented a selection of fine wines to the 200 attendees.

“As the Swirl series continues to grow, we are especially grateful to The Paul Foundation for their continued leadership and support for our shared mission,” said Meghan Gutierrez,” said Meghan Gutierrez, LRF Chief Executive Officer. “We are confident that the funds generated here tonight will go a long way in serving the AYA lymphoma community with research programs and services tailored to the specific needs of this traditionally underserved group.”

Lymphoma Research Foundation Hosts Congressional Briefing on Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Lymphoma

(L to R): Ellen Walker of The Paul Foundation, Kara Kelly, MD of Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Ann LaCasce, MD of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Rep. Lee Zeldin (R NY-1) and Rep. Lois Capps (D Ca-24)

New York, NY (April 20, 2016) – The Lymphoma Research Foundation’s Erase Lymphoma initiative hosted a successful briefing on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 for members of Congress and U.S. federal policy makers. The briefing entitled, “Tackling the Challenges of Adolescent and Young Adult Lymphoma” was held in collaboration with U.S. Representatives Lois Capps (D CA-24) and Lee Zeldin (R NY-1). The briefing was designed to educate policy leaders on the complex issues faced by young patients, caregivers, physicians, and scientists pursing new treatment options, with each group being represented on the panel.

Panel members included Representative Lee Zeldin; Representative Lois Capps; Ellen M. Walker, Chair of the Board, The Paul Foundation; Meghan Gutierrez, CEO, Lymphoma Research Foundation; Ann S. LaCasce, MD, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, LRF Scientific Advisory Board Member; Kara Kelly, MD, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, LRF Scientific Advisory Board Member; and Justine Staniszewski, Hodgkin lymphoma survivor, Lymphoma Research Foundation Diplomat.

Dr. Kelly and Dr. LaCasce, who treat AYA patients in pediatric and adult oncology settings, respectively, spoke of the inherent difficulties in treating who may progress from pediatric to adult standard therapies during their treatment, and of the lack of research data available on how AYA patients’ response to standard therapies may differ from older or younger patient populations. Ms. Walker, who founded the Paul Foundation to advocate for AYA lymphoma patients after losing her son to anaplastic large call lymphoma, and Ms. Staniszewski, a Hodgkin lymphoma survivor, discussed the difficulties AYA patients face in obtaining a timely diagnosis and navigating the healthcare system.

Congressman Lee Zeldin (NY-1) said, “Hosting a special Congressional briefing with the Lymphoma Research Foundation to help raise awareness to the unique needs of the adolescent and young adult lymphoma population is an essential and timely cause. In Congress, one of my highest priorities will always be funding research to provide the resources necessary to discover the next generation of treatment and deliver lifesaving or life improving cures.”

The briefing was organized through the public policy and advocacy arm of the Erase Lymphoma initiative, which seeks to bring awareness to the concerns of AYA lymphoma through patient education, research funding and scientific programs, and advocacy efforts. In 2015, the initiative awarded its first AYA-focused research grant, and hosted both scientific and patient education symposia focused on AYA lymphomas during the North American Education Forum on Lymphoma in September 2015.

The Paul Foundation honored by "the one hundred" and Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center

On June 10, 2014, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center held its seventh annual dinner to honor 2014 “the one hundred” recipients at the Westin Boston Waterfront Ballroom. Paul’s mom, Ellen M. Walker and Paul’s stepfather, Paul Creditor attended the event. During the course of the evening The Paul Foundation was mentioned and photos of Paul were displayed in the entrance to the ballroom and thanks to streaming video Paul and the other honorees had their photos displayed in the ballroom while the program went on through the evening. Matt Damon and Valerie Harper were there to discuss their own experiences with Mass General.

The event was both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. We so miss Paul, and had so much hope that he would be a survivor.

Kudos to Mass General for selecting The Paul Foundation as an honoree and for a memorable evening.

There are so many who are doing great work to lessen the suffering of other cancer patients and survivors. It’s gratifying to know that Paul was right, as he always was, in asking his mom to start The Paul Foundation so that what happened to him would not happen to others. We will continue to honor Paul and educate, illuminate and empower young adults and health care professionals about lymphoma in this demographic. It is what Paul wanted.
